He didn't know. Michael said in the episode "Independence Day" that Hank never left a mark before.
Another thing is that Michael is too proud to accept help. I'm sure that was a common topic of discussion between the three aliens for many years.
Obviously Max (and Isabel) knew that Michael didn't have the best home life, but it's not like he was completely negligent of Michael.

There's no discussion necessary when it comes to Michael's pride.
But his pride only means that you have to be more attentive to signs, since if something is wrong he won't tell you or ask for your help.
I have my issues with Max and I don't make a secret out of it, but even I don't think that he's blind to Michael's problems on purpose. He just might be a little naïve. He's happy and comfortable in life and can't imagine that not everyone is feeling like that.

Sure, Michael doesn't have the loving family like he does, but surely he could be happy if only he tried.
Why would someone trade his own bed (even if it might be a crappy one) and his own fours walls to sleep on your floor regularly (and it must happen very often, otherwise it would raise question about what happened) if somethig isn't badly wrong? Especially if that person hates to ask others for help. That should have been a big sign, that there's more going on than everyone thinks.
