  • I think Herr Wunderlich is singing as it was written. Devilishly hard to keep the written tempo so most singers stretch out some passages to make it easier. No knock on Kiepura, but this one can be surprisingly tough because of the tessitura and pacing.

  • Kiepura gives it more nuanced poetry and his tempo is more to the aria than this version

    which is very pedestrian .
