  • I am Ukrainian. 100 years ago most Ukrainians in Western Ukraine referred to themselves as Rusyn, today some people in Slovakia, Yugoslavia and Transcarpathia (Закарпаття) still call themselves Rusyn. The issue is complicated and it's partially a political preference :-)

  • In Ukrainian "Hutsul" is the name of the sub-ethnic group living in this part of the Carpathians. We know that in Rumanian the word means thief, but is has no special meaning in Ukrainian. These had a tradition of young guys going into the mountains isntead of joining the army. Bukovina was a nice place to visit for them - plenty of livestock, rich farmers... you know what I mean ;-)), but this was a long time ago, 18-19 centuries.

  • Not!!!!!!!!!!!!!You are wrong!!!

In Romanian, *Hutsul"means, too, Ukrainian people, from Romanian Carpathians, from Bukovina, and Maramuresch! In Romanian part of Bukovina, and Maramuresh, are, also, a beautiful places, to visit! I am a ukrainian from Romania (but I'm not hutzul..)

    In Romnian, thief=hotz..(not hutzul!)

Ukrainians from Romania, are respected people!!

  • Giuliatena: Scientists have been tracing the origins of hutsuls and meaning of the noun "hutsul" for 150 years without success. Connecting the word to Romanian "thief" was one of many explanations. Ioanpena: Romanian appeared when Dacians started using Latin instead of their native language. Perhaps some Dacians started using Ukrainian when they settled in this part of the Carpathians and mixed with the local population? I would not rush to make declare Hutsuls or their music Romanian...
