Michele Bowen premiered this piece for bassoon and electronics on July 22, 2008 at the International Double Reed Society Conference. The piece was written by George Marie who also operated the electronic component in real-time, via a laptop computer (sitting at the right). After Michele played the theme as an introduction to the piece, George processed Michele's live sound through various effects throughout the piece. Michele improvised much of the piece based on the effects that George created for her. Midway through, Michele played along with her own pre-recorded bassoon sounds (recorded in the studio and altered by effects).

  • Why does making music have to be about respect or talent? Who's "expecting respect?"

  • Amazing sound! Combination of musical skills and compter programing -- I think humans will do what humans can do and I do not see the point of all the *objections* in some of the commets --5 stars from me!!

  • very cool !

  • Her tone and agility are spot on!!!

  • Very clever! I like this alot :3

  • @DarkMedievalTimes1 Think she was just operating the keys and blowing air through the instrument without making the reed vibrate. You can hear a slight breathy sound and the keys closing too. I do a similar thing with saxophone but mostly to get my fingers working and warmed up slightly.

  • Awesome, what happened to the sound around 5:00 though, I couldn't hear her bassoon even though i could see her fingers moving quickly..?

  • This literally has nothing to do with talent. It's a collaborative effort to create something original and interesting. In music, talent is just a tool that enables you to play what you want when you want. Plus without electronics here, this piece would be a lot less varied and sonically interesting. Props to both on this, both have great skills.

  • Still don't have near to the views that Dr. Bowen has on her recital ;-).

  • I was in the audience for this piece's debut. This is a neat blend of modern technology and the various "special effects" being explored by composers in our day. Still, I'm not a huge fan of this style of music, it is great to hear a variety of things played in addition to the "standard" repetoire.

  • Hey you sound really good check out mine and tell me how i sound.:)
