Ahhh! This is the only version I could find on YouTube with the text by Agee! Thanks for sharing. What a wonderful piece of music. How much has been lost of the charm of the old days. I don't go back that far. But I do remember the ice man coming buy with his horse drawn cart. And the rag man when we lived in the country. :)
Thanks so much for sharing! rw

ONLY on youtube can this be heard and accessed s0000 easily! Music set to James Agee's poetry. How deeply moving. Thanks for posting, amico!

This is a masterpiece. Barber must have been a very spiritual man

One of the first books (Death in a Family) I read about family dynamics from a child's perspective. As noted on another youtube entry, the score reminds me of the theme from Sophie's Choice and Bernstein's theme from To Kill a Mockingbird.

Another work by Barber worth listening to: Summer Music.

I have listened to several versions - this seems to be the best to me. This brings back memories of long hot & humid summers without air conditioning. Everyone sat out - the house was like an oven.

But it's not finished! Wonderfully done, but the most beautiful part is after this one ends.
It's so beautiful
