This is part of an L.A. Times interactive map showing alleys or public byways in South Los Angeles where trash is frequently dumped. Half of the city's illegally dumped refuse is left in South L.A., contributing to decay in neighborhoods hard hit by poverty and crime. But the problem extends beyond the area. City taxpayers spent $12 million in 2008 to clean illegally dumped refuse. And contaminants such as oil and paint help pollute public waterways.
