  • I am from India, which is uniquely multilingual country, with hundreds of recognised languages & would render my perspective as follows:-

    1. Bilingualism & mulilingualism is rampant here, rather it is a norm, but the latest research suggests that even different languages, or varietis within an individual compete for space. Thats how one's competence in his heritage language fadss away till only a smattering of it is left [Proceess is called atrophy].
