The Beijing authorities have so far cleared beggars, street
peddlers, stray cats and dogs off the streets.
Now the Chinese police will check the capital's million-strong
migrant worker population. Those caught without valid permissions
to live and work in the city will be sent home.
But the low wages they earn in Beijing are still
preferable to salaries in their own local provinces.
Massage parlors doubling as brothels will also disappear.
They are a common sight in Beijing now
but not for very much longer. They are being forced to close.
Now unable to afford the cost of living in Beijing, prostitutes
have no choice but to go back to their families.
[Shu Ai Fang, Prostitute]:
"I'm worried I won't be able to find a job that pays well. My
family rely on me as I am the only one supporting them. I still want to go to
Beijing because now that I'm out of a job, my children, my daughter aren't
able to survive."
There is an estimated 150 million migrant workers in China. Many of
them are employed in building work for the Olympics.
They too face an uncertain future.
