Goddammit - I was actually looking forward to hearing the rest of his answer!

"Language is the core property that defines us as human beings..."

What did he mean by that?

I think he means that language is what makes humans unique in the animal kingdom

Sure, I take your point - that's definitely true. No other animals can do what we do.

But I can't help feeling that he's trying to get at something deeper. Why the word "define"?

For example I've heard some argue that consciousness only arises along with language...

Lol i'm way out of my depth...

What don't you get? Animals don't have language, they only have communication.

@timcp1 Firstly, utilizing the enemies' weapons against him hardly makes one a hypocrite. Secondly, are you sure about the funding, what is your source? Of course, the military is constantly funding all sorts of academic research, but I think it is silly to make a direct connection to Chomsky and the atrocities of the military simply because they fund academic research. Particularly because Chomsky's work is hard to kill people with. He has been very consistent in his views.

I don't have a problem with anyone who works for our Nations Military and defense corporations, it's an honorable career. However, when you start speaking against the military and saying that it is heinous, but yet you profit from it for 40 years, that is where you become a hypocrite.

You can look up Noam Chomsky: A life in Dissent for free on Google books and take a look at page 87. Hope this helps.

I appreciate the sharing of a legit source; sadly, that book is not available for free and pg 87 wasn't in the preview .

The back cover states the author's conviction of Chomsky's "remarkably consistency" in his interests and principals.

I see how you could make the connection that he is a hypocrite from profiting from the military but couldn't you also argue that is still within his values since he is taking funds away from what he views as reprehensible and using them against imperialism?

Did you look it up in Google Books? I just did two minutes ago, and page 87 is readily available. Type in Chomsky Life Dissent. You should be able to read it.

Thanks for being honest on the connection between the two. The only thing, is that he isn't "taking" he's profiting. That's the hypocrisy. Also, even if he took, that just would make him a crook. Robin Hood was still a thief.
