At the Power-Up Steve Phillips started the R4360 and ran it for over 2.5 minutes. The 28 cylinder engine produces 3,000hp, and may have been one of the eight engines that powered the Spruce Goose.

Some speculation that it would flip over can now be put to rest. At those low RPM's without a propeller at full pitch it wasn't likely that the engine would budge on its stand.

Since this video was made, we've put on the club prop, put on a better fuel pump and timed one one bank of cylinders.

  • We just cut down our 7' donor prop yesterday. Will make the club this week or next. And then we'll have to test it. ;-)

  • lol I see a red tag!

  • well 4300 with war emergency power...

  • Cool vid. Thanks for posting. Gallons per mile instead of MPG. Gotta love those "corncob" engines.

  • These engines spew greenhouse gasses. They should ONLY be run, even for show, if they are hooked up to a generator to feed power back into the grid. Just kidding. But seriously, what a beautiful sound! Such music!

  • I wish I had one of those in my room.

  • aren't these the engines that were on the sprues goose?

  • I heard that these engines retain heat; after shut down, to such an extent that in order to start it you have to perform hot re-starts for up to twelve hours after previously shut down? Dang, what a complicated sentence!

  • This old thing is the largest American radial engine ever produced. It has four rows of seven cylinders and displaced about 4,360 cu. in. (hence the name).

  • it crackes and pops, awsome

  • needs a flywheel?
