Ok grasshoppers.. this finger picking style was introduced to john by Donovan during their time in India. It shows the magnatude of artist Lennon was by taking his newly found inspiration and writng whole songs around it. Just listen to the White album

Lennon was, in fact, the only Beatles guitarist to really utilize the full travis finger-picking technique.
