In keeping with trying to learn and replicate some tracks by some of my favourite bass players (or steal their ideas, you decide) heres Peter Gabriels Sledgehammer. Its off a live album, and features some awesome playing from Tony Levin. A lot of his ideas I did steal like Ive got the octave pedal on, and he tends to use long notes, the 5th interval and ghost notes although his ghost notes sound slightly different to mine (or anyone elses) because of those drumstick fingers things he has.
But its not all just him and his line, I did put some of my own stuff in. Theres a little bass solo in the bridge and some of the fills I tried to ignore him and do what I thinks cool - got to be yourself and all that. But Im not going up against Tony Levins playing, I will no doubt come off worse. Thanks watching, please comment, rate and check out my other videos too. Rob Bob

  • A little overplayed for me. I think you´ll find mr. Levin to pe a very pure and to the point player. Liked the solo though. Keep your videos coming and give us something to ,,steal" as well. All the best

  • i absolutely love this rendition - it reminds me of the way my late uncle used to play bass. the impro is very original and altho the simplicity of the original was effective, i see no harm in a few extras here and there. nice 1

  • Thanks for posting Rob. Nice version. I'm plaing this song as a fill-in gig tonight and it helped to hear some other ideas. I slap the main riff on the lower stings of my 5 and do some melodic stuff with an octavier in the upper register. I kinda toggle back and forth between those basic concepts.

  • You're very talented... keep up the good work!

  • @MrStegunn

Overplayed if he'd been on stage with Peter. But for guy messing around at home and throwing out some amazing bits I think it's great. Everything he does sounds cool.

  • This is amazing.

  • Bring in da FUNK!

  • simpler is better.

  • yeah a lil bit overplayed...although i do understand that u want to show us your skill :)

I would say that in bass silence is as important as sound :)

But u defo can play :) Keep the good work dude :)

  • You're very talented dude!

  • Dude! awesome playing...way to go on the the fills....I love it when a bass player can do tasty fills..it shows imagination....theres nothing worse than a bass player playing straight or pure to the point? why do that? you are there for a reason, look at coltrane he "overplayed" but nobody stopped him! good job! is that a music man?

  • are you using an octaver ?
