Hey guys, this is like the companion version to my older "Sidewalks" video, only this time using the older version of the movie, more specifically the Franco Zeffirelli/1968 version.

SYMBOLISM
1:08 - 1:13 "Running away from the streets we knew" - Romeo and Juliet's being together is their version of rebellion towards their parent's feud.
1:16 - 1:21 "Like the time we thought was made for you" - As teenagers, they are supposed to have freedom of decisions, but their parents grudge prevents them.
1:43 - 1:51 "Looking ahead for the first time that we could drive out on our own" - Romeo and Juliet are making their own decision while considering the future by getting married... without being controlled by their parents.
2:03 - 2:11 "And all of the sun is gone away" - With Juliet dead, Romeo sees no reason to live.
2:11 -2:39 CLIP REVERSAL - If they could turn back time, knowing what they know now, things might have turned out differently.
3:03 - 3:11 "The bridges all crumbled, the water soaks into rocks..." With their deaths the feud is over and all their problems seem trivial.

DIALOGUE:
0:58 - "She's dead, my lord."
1:24 - "Thinkest thou we shall ever meet again?" "I doubt it not."
1:43 - "Thy propose marriage."
2:14 - "My only love sprung from my only hate."
2:17 - "That I must love a loathed enemy."
2:20 - "If they do see thee, they will murder thee."
2:23 - "But thou love me. Let them find me here."
2:27 - "The exchange of thy love's faithful vow for mine."
2:31 - "I gave thee mine before thou didst request it."
2:35 - "A plague on both your houses!"
3:06 - "All are punished!"
3:26 - "A glooming peace this morning with it brings. The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head. For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo."

  • Great version using young actors for the title roles. And Lawrence Olivier giving the prologue and epilogue (story of more woe) rounds it off perefectly

  • Yep, this is the version most schools use because it's a lot tamer than the newer version. Thanks for commenting!
