Go to market, download Startup Manager free. Open that app, from System tab, uncheck "Media storage" and you are done!

Well, this works, but afterwards I can no longer use any custom MP3s as ringtones and can no longer use custom sounds for notifications on Android 2.2 on the Samsung Epic 4G. Had to re-enable. Guess it's a evil but need.
