Rishi Chyavan narrates to Shatrughan the story of how Lavanasura killed Mandhata in order to demonstrate to him the importance of confronting him only when he was without his trishul that Shiva gave his father (see my earlier video 'Shiva's boon to Madhu'). In this story, Mandhata - one of Shatrughan's ancestors and ruler of Ayodhya, after conquering almost the entire earth, had designs on Devalok, causing Indra concern. After consulting with his guru Brihaspati, Indra mocked Mandhata asking him how he could possibly claim Devalok without conquering the entire earth. When Mandhata asked him who was it that was left unconquered, Indra mentioned Lavanasura, and asked him to return only after he had killed him. Accordingly, Mandhata invaded Madhupuri, and Lavanasura, on being informed of it, went single handedly, with only his trishul. Mandhata fired a few arrows to try and destroy Lavanasura, but the trishul rendered them worthless. Lavanasura then hurled his trishul at Mandhata, wiping out him and his entire army
