I also prefer Madame Montespon. I think Madame Maintenon was an opportunist and a snake in the grass. She betrayed Madame Montespan who had helped her attain her position as governess. Maintenon was the worst religious hyprocrite, pretending to be so pure, then behind Maintenon's back going after Louis XIV.
