40x time lapse footage of the "Station" forest fire smoke plume shot on 8-30-2009 from the Santa Clarita Valley.
Made from still images shot with a Canon SX10-is in 1080p HD, reduced to 720p HD for YouTube upload.

The smoke plume towers rose as high as 20,000 feet at times, according to NASA satellite observation, and the smoke was seen/felt as far away as Colorado.

The aircraft seen circling upwind of the plume is a Gulfstream Turbo Commander 690A. flying out of Fox Field in Lancaster. The plane, piloted by YouTube user "Fyrpylit", is flying at about 160Mph, and functions as an aerial observation platform for Incident Command, providing a birds-eye view of the fire, terrain, hazards, objectives, and coordination/communications with ground personnel and air support. Thanks to Fyrpylit for the great insider info!

The music is "The Bass Voice v1" from the "Solo" CD by Technician (yours truly).

  • Hard to imagine that it's just water vapour.

  • @123eldest It's interesting that a lot of people don't realize just how much water vapor is contained in a smoke plume, but it sure is more visible when it condenses and turns white at the higher altitudes... THanks for checking it out! =)

  • Fantastically!!!!!

  • dude the plane is fucking lost:P

  • that day is my b-day :D

  • I liked the plane flying laps around the valley, too. The time lapse definitely shows a lot of interesting things! Thanks for watching :-)

  • Killer....the time lapse really conveys the sense of movement within the smoke that is hard to see at actual speed. Bravo!
