"Core 'ngrato" ("Ungrateful Heart") is a Neapolitan song whose melody was composed by Savatore Cardillo in 1911 for Enrico Caruso. It's one of the pieces that tenors love to sing and a very romantic piece indeed. I've arranged it here for tenor and 6-string guitars, with the tenor guitar (naturally) taking the melody line! I've played it very much 'a tempo', and left some silences here and there to make natural pauses in the music.

A correspondent called Bob wondered if I had tabs for this as he couldn't find any. I'm in the process of sorting out tabs for this arrangement. :-)

  • Do you know if Neapolitan songs were originally accompanied by a guitar or piano, or...??

  • @TheVoicelesson Probably both - depending on the vogue of the moment and the environment in which they were sung. The popular ones like "Core 'ngrato", "Luna d'estate" and "O sole mio" were all formal compositions by people like Tosti (as opposed to folk songs) and may have been accompanied by piano and/or orchestra in a 'recital' situation. In the street - perhaps guitar and mandolin. But this is a guess on my part - I'm no expert! :-)

  • Will, where'd you dig this up? Strange and beautiful!

  • @jessyquedens I used to hear this on the radio as a child and got a request for some tab for it recently. I didn't have any tab so got the sheet music... :-)
