After a battle of wits with the boss of the second dungeon Link can finally place his grubby little paws onto the Fire Element. From there he ventures off to fuse those elements into his shiny new white sword and maybe this old dog might learn a new trick.

(continued)
Spirit Tracks didn't have it (and its canonicity is intact with call-backs to at least PH if not TWW as well), since the Master Sword is at the bottom of the sea (can't explain without spoiling TWW for people).
FS and FSA had the Four Sword instead (they're connected to this game but I'm not spoiling it).
All in all, LoZ doesn't necessarily NEED the Master Sword, since there are a number of games without it, and it wasn't present from the beginning.

Well, let's see, the first two games didn't have the Master Sword, as it didn't exist in the series then.
Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening didn't have it, though I have heard of people calling Discontinuity on those two since they took place in an alternate world and in a dream, respectively.
Phantom Hourglass didn't have it, though it is canon (Link takes Linebeck, his ship and the titular item back to the real world with him).
