This is my first ever Demo Reel. We were discouraged from using our own characters as juniors rarely have a say as far as character creation goes so none of these are my property.

The first model is Devon Aoki in one of Alexander McQueen's photoshoots. The image was cut off at the neck and so I took a few creative liberties with the dress. I'm very proud of this one in particular. She seems to be everyone's favourite as well.

The second model is Kaori from Junji Ito's Gyo. I'm happy with how she turned out as she was the one I least expected to do well on. I'm also really bad at coordinating colours together , so I wasn't very confident in my abilities to texture her well as the manga was black and white. Her skin is still a little too "waxy" in the end and there are a few other minor problems, but our deadline for submission was fast arriving and thus I had to make a few sacrifices.

The third model is Tweedle Dee as imagined by the 1933 version of Alice in Wonderland. He's the one I like the least. I fixed him up a lot from his initial form, but I still don't feel as though he really "fits" in with the two other characters as far as quality and theme go.

The music is from the film "The double life of Veronique" ad was composed by the great Zbigniew Preisner

I got a 90% in class for this.

  • I don't understand all of these derogatory comments on this page...

I thought this reel was fantastic. I love sinister and darker creations and think this was rather innovative. Besides, after looking at most reels on youtube, this one sticks to my mind, only because of haunting it looks.

Great job, i really enjoyed your reel. =)

Can you tell me where you studied 3D animation? I'm looking to do something similar myself.

    Thanks.

  • @JuJuJC Aw, thanks. That's really nice of you to say. As for schools, I went to a crappy school that had a year and a half intensive program that doesn't exist anymore. It was really awful and most of what I'd learnt was from tutorials online. Joining online forums and doing as many tutorials as you can will be more helpful than going to any school. The industry is saturated with people who want to model characters so networking and a great demo reel count more than a diploma.

  • I would say that the subject matter is inappropriate for a demo-reel, particularly given that the rendering is underwhelming.

Also, try taking the happy drugs, this stuff is pretty bleak.

  • @Jcolinsol Yeah, I realise that now . I tend to prefer darker aesthetics so it was difficult for me to understand that other people might take it the wrong way, especially not anyone who works in the video game industry. What exactly do you mean by the rendering was underwhelming? Do you mean that the models are not well done , the concept itself didnt work out , the editing is wrong? Im always trying to improve and ,even though this is two years old, i`m sure your comments could be helpful.

No, I wouldn't say that your modelling looks that bad, it mostly looks pretty clean, though your proportions could be better, some places need more distinct definition, and I'd like to see you really twist those polys more.

I meant that the shaders, lighting, and overall rendering looks flat, which doesn't show off your work well, and makes it look a little less than professional.

With better presentation, I'm sure that a HR person would overlook the subject matter.

  • @Jcolinsol You're completely right. Lighting and composition really isn't my strong point and it's really something I should focus on. Thanks so much for the comment. It's rare that people can critique work without being a jerk, especially on youtube. I really appreciate your constructive criticicism :)

I see, can you be so kind as to tell me which forums/ websites i can visit or tutorials i can learn from? ...

I tried a bit of maya and seeing so many buttons and tools are very overwhelming... i've no idea where to begin. :(

  • @micar8 Same thing people said about the inventor of A.L.I.E.N before he was famous ;)
