On November 10th 2006, during a peaceful protest against the controversial proposed Shell/Statoil refinery in Erris, County Mayo, Ireland a small group of demonstrators stood on the road leading to the site. The protesters chanted "Shell to Sea" because they want the refinery sited offshore to protect the health and safety of their community. At no time was the protest anything other than peaceful, and the police on duty were never in any danger. However, to clear the road for the Shell convoy, the police, led by Garda Superindentent Joseph Gannon and Garda Sergent Conor O'Reilly, used extreme force to beat the protesters out of the way.
