A Visual Aid For those People Who Are Interested In Converting There Standard definition Videos To high Definition.

As The Video Explains, it Is not possible to get Real HD just by Scaling Your videos up To 720, Or 1080. While It Is Possible (And very Easy) To Scale Videos up, you will not See Any Improvement. Actually, Chances Are, unless your RAW Footage Was Shot Perfectly, It's Most Likely going To look Worse Than before.

There Are Some plugins For Various Editing And Compositing Software That Are Supposed To Make your SD Footage HD, But It's no Good. I've Tested Quite A Few (With After Effects) And Found That you Can Achieve The EXACT SAME RESULTS just by Scaling The Video up, And Sharpening it. Not only Is It Easier, but It Doesn't Cost An Arm And A Leg, And Wont Result In UNGODLY Render Times.

TIPS FOR BETTER LOOKING DIGITAL VIDEO:

If you want HD, But only Have An SD Camera, then Learn How to PROPERLY light your Scene, White Balance, And Adjust your Exposure. These Basic Techniques Will get you Better Results Than Any "Quick-Fix" Plugin Will, And Will Also Make you A Better Film Maker, And Cinematographer.

(Oh, And If you Can Get your Hands on A Light Meter, Learn how To Use It. It Will Help you Make Sure you Have Even Lighting From Shot-to-Shot)

It May Not Be High Definition, But If Done Right, It Can look Great!!!

Most Consumer Grade Cameras Have manual White Balance, And Exposure Settings. Learn how To Use Them!!!! Always White Balance Every time you Set Up A New Shot.

One Thing To Remember, Is That your Cameras LCD, And Viewfinder Are Properly Calibrated To Get The Best look Possible. Most Basic Computer monitors Are not. So Before you Start Filming Your Big Scene, Do A Few Screen Tests, And hook your Camera up To A Tv, And See What It looks Like, Then Make your Adjustments And Try Again. Once you Have This Down,. you Will Be Able To Make Adjustments On The Fly!

Because your PC Monitor Is not Properly Calibrated, It Is Going To look Somewhat Different When Capturing To PC. If your Worried About The final outcome, Edit A Few Clips, And Burn Them To A DVD, Then Play Them Back On A TV. Again, Once you Have this Down, you Wont Have To Keep Wasting DVDs...

I hope this helps... There's Nothing Worse Than Spending hours Shooting Something, Only To find out your RAW Footage looks Terrible, And you Have no Time To Re-shoot Any Of It.

  • Then why are some methods better than the others ? And why are hardware encoders so much better at upscaling than software encoders ?
