A hymn written by Tieleman J. van Braght, a Dutch Mennonite elder who wrote the Martyrs' Mirror, a record of the lives of over 4,000 16th century Anabaptist-Mennonites who were tortured and died for their biblical beliefs, under the hands of both Roman Catholics and magisterial Protestants.

  • I absolutely LOVE this. I cry every time I hear it. So beautiful. Praise be to JESUS!

  • @soundthehorn Baptists and Anabaptists aren't the same thing. The Anabaptists are the fathers of Mennonites, Amish, and Hutterites. Pretty much the only thing Baptists share in common with the Anabaptists is the belief in believer's baptism. But the Anabaptists were far more "radical" (from the Protestant/RC perspective) and different in their beliefs than Baptists are. For example, their total repudiation for "secular culture".

    Fantastic hymn!

  • maybe at the beggining, but are they now?

  • @MrEriesal yes they did. they even tried to lay traps by hiring mercernaries to lay in wait to shoot any other relgious prospects that didnt carry a roseary with them

  • Thank you for singing this. We belong together. I am a German Mennonite. Gott befohlen! Eva

  • I find it inconceivable - even incomprehensible - how human kind could torture - even kill - another human for what he or she believes. Yet, they did this because "while we were still sinners (!!!) Christ died for us"!! I consider myself not worthy.

  • A sad hymn,but so beautiful,

    may God bless you all,

    Thank you

  • @weavermerle - You are right and the Lutherans places a poor second to the Roman Catholics.

a very poor third are the Calvinists although according to researched they just avoided the Anabaptists.

  • @MrEriesal - Yes it is very true, they died brutally by the thousands, not only at the hands of the Catholics, but also at the hands of Protestants, but as always "the blood of the martyrs, is the seed of the Church".

  • Is it true that the Roman Catholics of the earlier centuries tried to exterminate the Anabaptist?

  • @tarlen No they are not the same thing AT ALL

  • so true, @tarlen! Good response, the Baptists are quite removed from the "Ana...baptist" ... the believer's baptism and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ are about the only two similarities! Aside from having "baptist" in the label.
