If you're establishing an audio production environment in linux, you'd be foolish to pass on the JACK Audio Connection Kit, which allows for extremely low latencies, as well as a great universal transport control and audio routing capabilities.

This video tutorial should help you install and set up a basic JACK configuration, alongside the Realtime audio setup established in my previous tutorial.

Don't forget to watch in 720p HD.

  • I'm curious... does anyone know if I could use JACK to emulate a LineOut for audio capture on sound cards that don't allow capture? Or am I misunderstanding its functionality?

  • @aarsho That wouldn't be possible unless the sound source (web browser, media player, etc.) had a JACK extension to act as a routing source. Also, it's unnecessary; PulseAudio allows for audio capture on all sound cards natively. There's no such thing as an audio card that "doesn't allow capture." Just gotta do a little tweaking in PulseAudio preferences to get the option to show up.

  • does it work for adobe audition?

  • @lizaola510 Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if JACK/WINE will allow Audition to work under linux? Never tried it myself. Make sure the newest WINE is installed and give it a shot. Use a Portable version of Audition if you can find one.

  • 6:05 we can see an instance of /etc/security/limits.conf

  • @xXxCrossoveRxXx It's because JACK conflicts the default audio daemon for GNOME, pulseaudio. Partial solution is to "pkill pulseaudio" after finishing with any advanced musicmaking, which will restore desktop audio. I'm sure there's a way to bypass pa completely, but I haven't tried it.

  • @ytlovening JACK is primarily for Linux, although I heard that a Windows version exists. You can always use AISO.

  • Thanks jkymarsh, your tutorials are awesome. but can you make a video for windows? peace!

  • @gmotif6 This is a linux tutorial.

  • Hey, Can I setup a MIDI transfer via a JACK cable?

Simple graphical explanation (the best I could do):

    [Keyboard]---(JACK)---[PC(Rosegarden/LMMS)]
