@yeismeload wow... first, sorry for the multi-post (I don't know what happened, exactly, but yeah...oops). The game design is a bit different, and there are some nerfs for the US version, like the ability to shoot your gun while wearing the cardboard box (the stealth is really underplayed on the NES version, sadly)

About the lack of equipment, at least in the sequel it is explained that Foxhound operatives don't bring weapons along so that they cannot be traced back to the U.S. for maximum deniability. Of course that doesn't really work for Metal Gear Solid since everyone and their mother know who Solid Snake is on that godforsaken island.
