The Newberry Consort Presents the new early music ensemble Concitato. The performers are: Joan Plana,baroque violin; Anna Sampson, baroque cello; Jason J. Moy, harpsichord. The concert,Stylus Phantasticus, the fantastical style of 17th century Italy, was recorded November 11, 2008 at Ruggles Hall the Newberry Library, Chicago, IL. The performers:
Joan Plana, baroque violin, holds a Masters of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) and an Early Music Certificate from Case Western Reserve University. He is a core member of Apollos Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, and has been concertmaster, soloist and guest conductor with the CIM-Case Baroque Orchestra. His baroque violin teachers include Cynthia Roberts, Julie Andrijeski and Miho Hashizume, and he has also received lessons with Jordi Savall and Jorg-Michael Schwarz. Recipient of the Jeanne Lamon Scholarship Award, he attended the Longy, Oberlin and Tafelmusik Summer Institutes, studying with Elizabeth Blumenstock, Marilyn McDonald and Jeanne Lamon. Born in Lleida (Catalunya), Joan received his Bachelor of Music from the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya in Barcelona, where he studied with Kai Gleusteen and the Ysaye Quartet. Winner of several national music competitions, he has performed in Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Canada and the United States. Joan is currently finishing a Professional Studies degree at CIM, where he studies with Paul Kantor.
Anna Sampson, baroque cello, completed her undergraduate degree in cello performance at McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, and was awarded a scholarship in 2002 to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England. She has won prizes in the Canadian Music Competition and scholarships for studies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Orford Arts Centre, Oberlin in Casalmaggiore, and the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute. Anna has been heard in recital on CBCs Radio-Canada, and has performed with Torontos Aradia Baroque Ensemble and numerous other Early Music performing groups across Canada. She studies baroque cello with Christina Mahler of Tafelmusik, Canadas period-instrument orchestra.
Jason J. Moy, harpsichord, holds undergraduate and Masters degrees from McGill University in Montreal, where he studied with Hank Knox and Luc Beausejour, and received valuable guidance from Bruce Haynes, Jory Vinikour, and other mentors. Jason has concertized extensively in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and is currently based in his native Chicago. Equally facile as a soloist and continuo player, he has performed with groups like the Bach Week Festival Orchestra, Ars Musica Chicago, members of the Baroque Band, and the Oriana Singers, as well as the innovative Miami-based Project Copernicus, of which he is a founding member.
