Polar bears are edging towards extinction. But at a zoo in Rhenen, a pair of polar bear twins are bringing hope for the future of the species. Here's more on the story.
Polar bear twin cubs Freedom and Swimmer were born last December 14. Their mother was Huggies, a polar bear rescued fifteen years ago on the Siberian coast. She was only five months old when she was found floating alone on an iceberg. After she was picked up, she was sent to the Dutch Zoo in the town of Rehenen. This is her second successful pregnancy in captivity.
[Dirk Jan van der Kolk, Manager of Animal Care]:
Since they have been born, they've been inside the den, they have been there for three months now, so this is the first time they went outside and, as you can see, they are very happy to have the sunlight and have the fresh air.
The Kimberly-Clark diaper manufacturer has adopted the twin polar bear cubs. Polar bears have been on the list of endangered species for two years. The Rhenen Zoo has an ongoing breeding program for the endangered species.
