This experimental opposed design using Briggs & Stratton engines, is what is called an opposed engine, since there is 2 pistons with a crankshaft at each end. The crankshafts are chained together to keep them synchronized with each other. I varied from the true opposed design by staggering the cylinders so that their centerlines don't line up now. This allowed me to create more of an over-head valve design, out of 2 Flatheads. I am working on a true opposed type 2 cycle, supercharged engine,based on the Junkers Jumo 205, but it is a long ways away yet. Some of the unusual noise is the flywheels rubbing on the cooling shroud, it just wants to rub for some reason :(
With about 9:1 compression, this is a beast to start, as a second person is required to hold it down.
It runs well, and usually starts on the first pull. The throttle is set about 40% open, as the 1 carburator is fussy about feeding twice the engine it was designed for, so I throttle it with my hand on the vid.
The whole set-up weighs in at about 50lb, it is an awkward beast to lift around due to its shape and size.

HaHaHa!!! :)
I can understand your reasoning there, the Wankel is definately an Alien engine, but I think the Deltic is also :)

@ChargerMiles007 no, the wankel rotary engine was brought by aliens

Howdy, I know I have seen a vid on YT where someone welded 2 cast iron block horizontal Briggs engines into a 2 cylinder, it seemed to run very well :)
Have a good one.

@ChargerMiles007 Yes I was wondering how one carb that looked stock could power it at a higher rpm. Also from what I can see it has one governor which has me some what confused also. Its very quiet for two engines even with mufflers for each one and very smooth. Very interesting project Thanks for sharing it and taking your time to answer questions. I am wondering now how two horizonal shaft engines would work or maybe someone on You Tube has already done this project.Cheers

@slamaskin1
Yes, that would be a good one, as the chain wouldn't have to handle the whole load, only keep the engines timed together, nice thinking!

@ChargerMiles007 i think that it could be used on a little boat or something, powering two propelers or something like that

@ChargerMiles007 Ah i see hmm well you never know if you can find something that will work go for it but it seems like its running well here.

No practical applications for this engine, but in the past, Fairbanks Morse, Napier, and Junkers have built many real opposed piston engines. Look up the Napier Deltic, if you want to blow your mind with an Awesome engine!!!! It is a triangular shape, with NO cylinder heads!
Personally, I think it is an Alien design brought to Earth!!!! :) lol

are there any practical applications for this engine ???...or is this one off challenge ???

@heathfiedler
They are both 3.5 horse engines, so I guess an 8 horse carb might work better.
Briggs made some 7 horse engines, but I think they are all horizontal shaft types.
