Far and Wide

So my son Jack's favorite song in the world right now is "Far and Wide" by The Roadside Graves. He makes me play it for him every time we get in the car and knows all the words. Unfortunately, the only local shows they play start around midnight at the earliest, which means Jack seeing them live has always been a fantasy. Until tonight...

Jenn and I found out the Graves were playing an acoustic set at 7 PM at "The Raconteur" bookstore in Metuchen, NJ, so we got Jack and Maddie all cleaned up and in their pajamas and raced out there to see if we could convince the band to play "Far and Wide" early in their set. But much to our dismay, we arrived to find out that there was an opening act, and the Roadside Graves weren't going on until 8:30. Trust me, I was not psyched to explain this mix-up to my son, who was already asking me if it was okay to dance to the song...

However, just as I was about to deliver the bad news, the aforementioned opening act -- "The Parson Red Heads" -- suggested that the night's festivities begin with the song that Jack came to hear. John and Jeremy from the Roadside Graves obliged, and they put on the following impromptu performance. Never has a little boy been so shyly ecstatic (as you'll see, he couldn't bring himself to sing, but I think the high-five at the end captures how he felt), and never have a Mom and Dad been so touched.

Anyway, I apologize for the shaky I-Phone camera work and even more for my out of tune harmonies, but I really wanted to share this video -- if only to thank the guys from both bands for their generosity (that's two members of Parsons Redheads in the aisle to the left), and for truly giving us a night to remember.
