  • when you have been playing guitar for decades you dont feel any more like "shredding" to prove everybody you can play fast. Playing fast doesnt need much skills, but paying attention to every note you play thats a true good player

  • shredding is one flavor, and adds to a players trick bag.

tasteful "soloing" is a platform for speed bursts more so than speed being a platform for taste. non stop shredding is no fun to hear, after a while.

  • Let's face it. Shredding is basically testosterone driven. All of the Greats from Al Di Meola to Zappa (this includes Larry Carlton) did the shred thing when they were younger players just to prove that they could. And Larry certainly showed he had the speed. The thing that Larry Carlton has always had that I don't find in alot of other great players is just the sweetest "touch". Which is just part of the reason he was and is still one of the most sought after session players ever recorded.

  • Is Larry tuned down a tone here? :S

  • Larry Carlton the jazz guitar man!!!!

  • @HalCmman Yeah like we all know your name

  • @GalaxyHorse I even like some of the shreddy players , its astounding to witness some of these cats

do their thing and some are musical players....its a niche.

Maybe speed is like gravy : even though it is a tasty liquid does not mean you should drink a lot of it.?

  • @lilnetty2 Amen to that! I see these 'speed wizard' so-called master Guitar teachers that are on the Net, and they have Zero heart, Zero soul in their speed-driven techniques-it kind of misses the whole point-Music is an emotional art, you have to feel something.

  • so many feel so many groove

where the fuck is my brain?

  • What's the name of this song?

  • Some people remember where they were when they heard the news about JFK... I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Larry Carlton --I was 16, washing dishes in a restaurant when The Crusader's tune "Spiral" came on the radio. Blew me away!

  • Larry did a lot of the guitar work on Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" album (BTW, the best version to look for is the Bob Ludwig-mastered original LP, with the "RL" in the deadwax - One of the best-sounding LP's ever released). He also played guitar on the "Hill St. Blues" theme song (from the TV show). He played rhythm guitar and some fills work on the SD song "Aja" (but not the guitar solo in the middle - That's Walter Becker - Listen to the guitar before and after the solo - THAT'S Carlton).
