Here is the beginning of a very different "Cosi" production, directed by Doris Dörrie. It takes place some time in the 1970s, when the Flower Power revolution was in full swing and hippies were the trendsetters. (Update: I have posted all 21 segments of this opera for the enjoyment of opera lovers all over the world.)

No.1 Terzetto "La mia Dorabella capace non e"

No. 2 Terzetto "E la fede delle femmine"

No. 3 Terzetto "Una bella serenata"

Fiordiligi (Dorothea Röschmann)
Dorabella (Katharina Kammerloher)
Guglielmo (Hanno Müller-Brachmann)
Ferrando (Werner Güra)
Despina (Daniela Bruera)
Don Alfonso (Roman Trokel)
Chor der Deutschen Staatsoper Berlin
Conductor (Daniel Barenboim)
Director (Doris Dörrie)

  • Say what you will about modernized productions, I think this works. Cosi is not tied to aristocracy (like Figaro) or fantasy (like The Magic Flute). It's overall message about love and infidelity is very broad. If the moral of the opera is that "All women are like that," then that maxim would apply to today's world too, right?

Normally I'm not a fan of modernized performance. I once saw a production of Don Giovanni set in a bondage-themed nightclub...I need not say more.

  • How is it arrogant to add a new context to such an oft-performed piece?

I agree! I think it works for certain productions and it doesn't work for others. As you said, this theme is really universal. The Ring Cycle with a Star Wars theme though...

  • da kann man nur sagen "schuster, bleib bei deinen leisten", frau dörrie.

  • the modern theme does not work for me, I'm too traditional.

  • Roman looks hot hahah

  • I think this is boring. Sorry.

  • It's a British description of something that is rather badly made or done. I suppose it comes from supposing what a stray dog has for breakfast, and it cant be choosy. Similar to "pig's ear" but that comes from the saying "you cant make a silk purse from a sow's ear", now reduced to "pig's ear" (which would make a nice breakfast for a dog).

  • Dog's breakfast?

You're right it's an average production, i'm just curious about the saying.
