Again, close-up of a diode from an HD-DVD player. This time, the metal casing surrounding the diode chip has been carefully removed with a dremel tool (OK, well as carefully as I could!). Now you can see the small laser semiconductor chip sitting on top of the base with the small gold wires attached. This is powered up with ~30mA of power, which is still very bright on the camera, but relatively dim to the naked eye. It is interesting to see the whole chip light up, though :)

  • I don't get it. Why does the whole room get completely dark after a little tiny light comes on in a perfectly well lit room! Something doesn't smell right!

  • @uttershock because CCDs are very sensitive to that wavelength and the camera is automatically adjusting exposure time due to it detecting a strong light presence, even if it does not look bright to our eyes.
