When you are living in medium to high density housing, smokers need to be courteous enough to not inflict their toxic smoke on other residents by allowing their smoke to drift into other apartments - the homes of young families.
The current NSW strata laws do not specifically recognise your right to live in a smoke-free home.
I joined in on this morning's NSW Strata law review discussion on ABC 702 Sydney to raise this issue. Cathy Sherry's response is correct, yet residents are still powerless to demand clean air, especially if, as in my case, you have a Strata Manager who claims smoking is merely a habit, and not a nuisance, nor a health hazard to me and my children.
Why is it that I can be protected from second hand smoke in pubs, clubs, shopping centres, cafes, restaurants, buses, train stations, playgrounds and public buildings but not in my own home?
This needs to change.
The Strata scheme law review consultation closes Feb 29, 2012. We can all have our say on this review at http://www.openforum.com.au/strata
Just as smokers do have the right to smoke, non smokers have equal right to smoke free air. Especially our children who cannot make that choice for themselves. I support Lara & all those trying to change this stituation 100%.

If you can't burn garbage on your balcony, why is it ok to burn tobacco?

Smokers don't care about their own health so they will never ever give a shit about anyone elses. The sooner they all kill themselves off, the better.

WE DRIVE CARS, how is this even an issue when we pollute in endless other ways literally polluting thousands of times more chemicals into the environment. Let people do what they want omg. And she even said "leukemia or something" she is not the sort of person we should be taking advice from.
