The United States Africa Command (or AFRICOM) is responsible for U.S. military operations and military relations with 53 African nations - an area of responsibility covering all of Africa except Egypt. It was set up post 9/11 and officially established in 2007, with the aim to run all Americas military operations in Africa, as well as improving security and bringing development across the continent. But would a strong US base for freedom and democracy help shore up the broader dreams and aspirations of the African people? Is Africom a body that Africans should embrace or is it one that African governments should be wary of, because the real intention is more sinister - a grab for oil and natural resources? And would Americas foreign policy towards Africa change under President Obama?
