This video is of a MTH Electric Trains Santa Fe 2-10-4 Texas steam locomotive. It is from their Premier line and has Protosound 2.0. I've had this locomotive since 2002 and it has seen quite a bit of use over the years.

The freight this locomotive is pulling is made up of rolling stock from Atlas O, K-Line, Lionel, MTH, and Weaver Models.

The caboose was made by Lionel during the MPC era. I don't know if a red bay window is correct for the steam era on the Santa Fe, but this caboose was a Christmas present I received in 1978. It is very special to me. Even though the newer cabooses are more detailed, I have no plans on replacing this one. It has brought a lot of enjoyment to me over the years and hopefully will make many more trips around the Christmas Tree.

I do not have DCS yet, so it's being controlled conventionally with a vintage Lionel ZW transformer. The track is K-Line tubular with O-72 curves.

  • im not usually a fan of 2-10's but this one is beautiful train

  • Thanks for the compliment and comment. I'm partial to the Northern, Mountain, and Berkshire classes but some of the 2-10-4's are pretty cool also.

  • Love MTH engines! The smoke units on them are awesome. One time I had my smoke unit on full and was using Christmas scented smoke and I accidentally made my whole basement smell like Christmas trees. I use Pipe Smoke now because it gives a more realistic scent and doesn't smell as potent as the Christmas scented one.

  • Thanks for the comment. In my opinion, MTH does have the best smoke units. One time I was running this locomotive with my Railking Big Boy and actually set the smoke alarms off. I usually use unscented or coal fired steam locomotive smoke fluid, but I'll give the pipe scented smoke fluid a try now. Thanks for the info.

  • Please disregard my note asking for age of the Santa Fe Texas, I forgot to read your introduction information first. I enjoy your video series of steam locomotives. This and the MTH Niagara and Lionel FEF are my favorites pending viewing all your videos. The Lionel FEF is the best of the locomotives, but seeing the MTH Niagara after the FEF pulling the same consist showed the Niagara favorably, such that I am considering buying it. (I have the FEF on order.) Thanks for posting!

  • Thanks for the comment, Ken. And I'm glad enjoy my videos. This locomotive was in MTH's 2001 volume 1 catalog. A second version was also in their 2005 volume 1 catalog. MTH also made a Pennsylvania and a C&O 2-10-4. The FEF is a great locomotive. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

  • @rj2571 yeah definitely give it a try. The only reason I have pipe smoke is that my hobby shop only sells the Christmas scent and the Pipe Smoke scents. I wish they had coal scented. MTH's new trains for the past 2 years have actually had different whistles on their premier line. I would love to get one but they are way to expensive. I want to get a Railking Imperial K4 from their 2010 V2 catalog.

  • I haven't seen this locomotive from MTH before, when was it released? Is it from the early-mid 1990's? Thanks, Ken

  • Thanks for the compliment. I wish I had the space for a permanent layout. But I am very thankful to be able to set this up each year for the holidays.

MTH did a nice job with this locomotive. It does run well and is also fun to operate.

  • I have the sister engine! BEAUTIFUL set-up ! (yours) :-) Tom
