Let's see here: virtually all industry in the South destroyed, successful Union naval blockades preventing meaningful resupply to the Southern states, currency that was worthless, and at the end of the war the South had ~150,000 troops compared to >1 million Union troops. At that time the United States had the largest standing Army on the planet.
