How they did the acid blood effect in ALIEN

the floor was obviously made of polystyrene and the ACID was nail polish remover. At least that's what I heard, and it DOES look like the real thing...

we did this experiment at school. Basically, polystyrene as we use it has a lot of air, like 90% of it is trapped air. Using acetona or nail polish remover just releases the air and leaves you with the polymer.
