ok sure.. i agree.
emulating the people you admire will not get you there, that is a fact. But, if you've ever meditated before, it promotes thinking about your own preferences and goals, and sorting them out with clarity. Every human being in the world who meditates, clears their minds towards their desires in life. Its a very real thing that everyone can experience. In a way its more of a tool for self enhancement rather than a pattern of behavior which determines what you will be

ok im sorry to assume.
"Meditation works for Lynch but it doesn`t have to be something you or I need. " david lynch would disagree, thats all im saying

@retread01 The technique can be practiced without believing anything spooky or pseudoscientific (as can vipassana, as can the practice of stilling the mind in general), but it seems that some of the representatives of transcendental meditation feel they can make claims about objective reality based upon their subjective spiritual experiences. Meditation helps me feel amazing and helps me in interpersonal relationships, transcendent experiences, bla bla bla, but some feel they can go from this to

@rubin3364 No, you just don't understand the full scope of TM. It is a religion. They just don't tell you that at the front door to make sure you get involved. Deny it all you want, it doesn't change the facts. The meaningless mantras are the names of Hindu gods and chosen specifically for that reason.
@retread01
TM is an action that can be taken without involvment in any group whatsoever. It is an individual action chosen by the person. You don't need to join anything.
At that, if people were to join it, it would be a cult, not a religion.
However, people hiring a meditation guide is normal. Meditation has proven to work for people. And people getting more into meditation is normal as well. People buying books on TM is just an extension of that.
Have you tried it?

@retread01 (continued) making claims about quantum physics and things of the like. It is very much like a religion in the sense that they have found an area of science which is currently difficult to understand, and they've inserted their metaphysical claims into that space. In any case, if TM works for people and makes them happier and such, I don't mind. It's an esoteric dispute, but I don't think the technique of using a mantra can get you to the base of consciousness as well as letting go.
