You can forget Chewing Gum and Dustman, this was real Donegan. Love him or hate him - I don't know anybody who hated him - you really got value for money.
This is one of my favourite records - it was on my dad's Lonnie Donegan album and I played it over and over as a child. Now I think it's really great vocal by Lonnie and I love the way that the backing marches along ominously towards the climax of the song.
Great to hear this one! Nearly 20 years ago one of the college stations where I lived (KFJC) was playing a bunch of Donegan's stuff on a Sunday morning when I was heading out somewhere. Thanks for posting this one! Great performance of this classic, for sure!
This was always a favourite of mine back in the mid to late fifties. I don't think anyone has ever put so much feeling and heartrending emotion into a song since this Donegan classic.

Found TWO of Lonnie's albums at a boot sale recentl, best £2.00 I ever spent.
This track one of my favorites along with Seven Golden Daffodils (always bring a tear to my eyes).
So special Lonnie.
