Though Mary Pickford was most famous for her rare ability to convincingly play children and young girls, she never really had a true childhood of her own. As a child actor in the theatre, she spent her early years on constant tour, before moving in to film as a protege of director D.W. Griffith. Audiences loved the girl they called `The Girl With the Curls' or `Little Mary', and massive superstardom followed.
Large props and sets were often used to make Mary - already petite - seem even smaller and more child-like. However, no amount of special effects would have been able to convince us without her innate ability to portray the thought patterns of children, as well as their essential good-heartedness regardless of their mischief.
