this is retarded. the lake isn't supposed to be frozen, and the bird is able to fly. this is a perversion of the great Prokofiev's original intent. Oh well, leave it to a lesser mind to muck up the spirit of a great classic. People should leave the classics alone!

Just watched this on a recording which I have and it really is a joy to watch.
At 32 minutes, this is the longest film to win the Best Animated Short category in the Academy Awards through 2010.
They should make more stop motion films like this.
Peter and the Wolf is superbly done! :)

Gotta love it when stop motion films like this emphasize the hand-made quality of the medium, while still looking nice and polished.

I was waiting for this to come to the states and I finally caught it on Amazon - I just love this film, I think it is absolutely beautiful - it works both in contemporary and classical fashion. Such a work of art this. They did a splendid job in rejuvinating the story.

This film is now available on DVD in the United States. I picked up my copy at Best Buy, but it can be had at Amazon or any other retailer of DVDs.

but why the bird needs a balon?

His wing was injured. He feels better and finally flies on his own at the end of the film.

I was thinking could the duck not have been able to fly because in real-life they can fly really well and go fairly long distances, it would have also avoided the wolf and flew away to safety

What a common-sense question!! You'll have to ask the composer for the answer to that one.
Prokofiev invented the story and narration himself, drawing on memories of his own childhood.
Unfortunately, the man has been "otherwise occupied" since 1953, and he does not return phone calls or emails. Nor is he on Twitter or Facebook.
I do know, however, that the long & skinny look of the duck in this version is similar to real ducks the filmmaker saw in Europe during the research phase.
