Of course, I am American, we don't have a king or queen. But, sometimes I think it would be a good idea. Our president has to do the jobs of being a president and all of the ceremonial roles, as well.

Queen Elizabeth is Head of State, Head of the Armed Forces, Head of the Church of England, she has the power to dissolve goverment. Veto Vote, and declare war. Not to mention she has the Queen's perogative.
-
She also is the head of the British army, and it is to her they swear an oath of loyalty to, She can pardon anyone for any crime she wants, and cannot herself be prosecuted for breaking the law (As under King Henry VIII policy of the King/Queen can do no wrong)

What is your opinion regarding the expulsion of the hereditary peers from the House of Lords about ten years ago? Of course, it is none of my business, I am American. However, I found it rather horrifying that one House of Parliament can arbitrarily ransack another House of Parliament without a direct vote of approval from the people in the form of a referendum. In the US we have a system of "Checks and Balances." It sometimes boggs this down but prevents drastic changes by government.

@GusLuke52 The removal of Hereditary peers was perhaps one of Labour's better moves, because the hereditary peers system, did allow for some dim witted people to sit in a house they have no interest in aswell as its majority being conservative or rather wealthy which could allow for a bias in the House of Lords. The House of Lords Act was passed with a majority in the HoC but it was also passed in the HoL, both houses agreed to the reform. The vote of approval from the people is based on labours

@GusLuke52 manifesto when it won a landslide majority victory in 1997... the people knew that if they voted for Tony Blair, reforming the lords was one of his policies. Don't ever say its none of your business, the politics of any country affects another and how can we globally make new systems without looking at old ones.
We do have a system of checks and balances: The bill is presented in the Commons or Lords, then is debated and concluded, then passed to the next house (lords or commons)

@GusLuke52 debated concluded, then put into law. Perhaps from what I've seen of the U.S.form of checks and balances it prevents any government from carrying out the 'peoples will' when a president has been elected on a certain manifesto, thus preventing any change from ever happening.

It is refreshing to hear a young person speaking of the Royal Family in such a supportive and respectful manner. Quite a contrast to the recent videos of when Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were accosted by supposed college youths in London ranting "Off with their heads!" Disgraceful behavior.
Again, thanks for your clear headed commentary.

@GusLuke52 I was in London at the student protests about an hour before that happened, the problem is alot of people, especially more militant parties that are taking advantage of students have misdirected anger towards the royals, well I believe. If for example... the socialist workers party (known for encouraging violence at alot of the protests), told its young members of both sides of the story maybe people wouldn't be shouting of with their heads. Students have lost public support cos of it
