In Burma, security is tight outside Rangoon's Insein prison where pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is facing her fourth day of trial. Here's today's update on her trial.
Today is the fourth day of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's trial at Insein Prison in Rangoon. Security remains tight as barricades are placed to block people and vehicles from getting close. Soldiers have opened some security checkpoints and are checking all vehicles heading into Rangoon. After days of international outrage, some 30 diplomats and 10 Burmese journalists were allowed to watch the 45-minute hearing on May 20th. [Nyan Win, Aung San Suu Kyi's Lawyer]: (male, Burmese) "Allowing diplomats to attend the trial doesn't mean the court is open to the public. We cannot say the trial is open unless they permit everyone to attend." However, there is no sign from the military junta that today's trial will be open again for media and diplomats. Aung San Suu Kyi is charged with breaking the terms of her house arrest after an American man swam across uninvited to her compound. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate could face up to five years in jail if found guilty. Critics say the junta is trying hard to eliminate political opposition from Suu Kyi ahead of next year's elections.
So elections next in Burma eh?The internet will be watching closely.Myanmar(Burma) is a UN member.Aung San Suu Kyi is protected under article 9 and article 10 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights..
