Thursday, March 4, 2010 Board of Regents meeting at CSN in Las Vegas. Regents and Nevada University Presidents discuss the finalized 6.9% cut to the education system and decide how to handle them.
Free, universal public education is a democratic, not a specifically socialist, demand. The defense and expansion of public education, however, is incompatible with a society whose fundamental principle is inequality, a society in which trillions are handed to the banks and the entire political and media establishment proclaims that there is "no money" to keep schools open and to pay teachers a decent wage
So you think that it is ok that they are cutting the social work program both in UNLV and UNR.... Wow! You do realize that social workers advocate for abused/neglected children, abused/neglected elderly, homeless and many other oppressed individuals.
By supporting the budget cuts you are essentially saying it is ok for programs like social work to be dismantled. These are PEOPLE we are talking about, not dollar signs. -Just some thoughts from someone majoring in a "non profit" program...
This is the most pathetic rally I have ever been to. People do not know what they are talking about. If the state has no money, they shouldn't fund classes that make no profit. The people out there had signs that said, "Save are school" and "Why aren't the rich ask to sacrifice." You can see the rich sign in the video. I go to WNC and the college is amazing, yes they should make cuts to other things; but when you have a people in a rally and they don't even know what they are talking
about... it really makes me sad to live in this state. I love this state I have lived here my hole life, but when I see stuff like this it makes me sad to say I am from this state.
