Yes collision was real. Pilots died making this movie. Read Hells Angels / Howard Hughes history.

@Duchovicius I wouldnt be so sure. I mean Im sure it ws really two planes hitting, I mean if we want to get into details, multiple pilots and a mechanic died in the filming of this movie, aswell as most of the pilots are actual world war pilots, annnd they refused to do some of the shots in the movie, leading Hughes to film them himself, which even he crashed doing.
