    It appears to be random except for what appears to be a stop signal, the low loud frequency. I personally would like it a lot more if it could be directionally and velocity controlled by different frequencies/ octaves

    You'd have to contact the authors to be sure, but I think the mapping is like you say. I think there was difficulty because it's hard to tell which way is "left" or "forwards" when the ball is completely black and round.
