I'm still not convinced. "Fade out" is done through the mixer desk, live or recorded. The way the drummer bangs the drums, right at the end, suggests he is playing live and trying to play live with a recorded voice track, is more trouble than it's worth. There are a couple of bits that might suggest Elvis is miming but he is singing; playing guitar and has to sneer and mug at the right camera. Sometimes I'd get my lips in a tangle on-stage, looks silly but the right noises come out.

I think they are miming... but to what? It's not the familiar studio recording, so maybe they brought in a special live-in-the-studio performance to mime to, or maybe it's from a rehearsal. The giveaways are that Elvis's lips don't match the vocal in a few spots (but he's admirably close through most of it) and that the song fades out at the end.

I get the feeling that they aren't miming.

Certainly you could mime on TOTP, but you could also play live, from about the mid-sixties onwards. Some bands were not that good at playing live, and some it should be said, were not very good at miming, but I'd say that the band are definitely playing their instruments. This band sound exactly like this when they play live, take it from me; they really are that good. Elvis also had a reputation for "arrogance" I think you are watching the real thing

In the late 1970s I saw Elvis Costello live. He looked so much like Buddy Holly that I kept expecting to hear him do Peggy Sue. But EC is his own kewl dude & not a Buddy Holly clone at all.☺

I've never appreciated lip-syncing. Love seeing old footage though! Thank you so much.

EC re-recorded the entire My Aim Is True album with The Attractions, but that version has never been released. I expect that's the source of the track they're miming to.

" I said I'm so happy I could die , she said drop dead and left with another guy"--If I could write one line like that in my whole life I'd be happy , freaking genius
