STEVE HAYES: Tired Old Queen at the Movies -- Episode 1

"Demetrius and the Gladiators" (1954)
Its gladiators galore and Christians to the lions in this sequel to THE ROBE. Enough beefcake, over the top acting and lurid Technicolor to fill a movie queen's dreams. And the campy performance of Jay Robinson as Caligula is not to be believed!

  • jay robinson stole the show--like the other Robinson--andrew from dirty harry--both were not to have a great movie career-but they were good in there respective roles--jay played the same act in an episode of bewitched--must of gone to the dr smith school of british accents..

  • After I heard your erudite comments on Shirley Jackson, I suspected that you were a little more knowledgeable than the average YouTube denizen. I was right. Almost nobody knows that information but me and thee and only because I read "We Have Always Lived In The Castle" way back when. You have a new fan, Tired Old Queen. I'm going to subscribe, so I wont miss any of your movie recommendations.

Not incidentally, your name cracks me up!

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • how do you subscribe?

  • Great series, recommending it to everyone I know.

  • Steve Hayes can do NO wrong! I adore your wit and wisdom, and I'm so glad someone else loves classic film like I do. "Demetrius And The Gladiators" is great fun, especially when Hayward and Jay Robinson are onscreen together. There are moments there when I thought they might actually start gnawing on each other! Please, keep up the good work. You're giving this tired, old queen a lot of enjoyment.

  • I am so happy to find this!!!! We have already dubbed you Auntie Steve and you will be making our MN winter much less annoying when we combine you with Netflix. =)

  • Steve is like Joe Franklin on crack !

No one is funnier or knows more of the golden age of movies than Steve!

A huge fan for over 30 years!

  • OMG, I love this guy! Having grown up with movies like DEMETRIOS AND THE GLADIATORS (saw it so many times as a kid with family members), I agree with everything he said about it! Esp. Richard Egan-Richard Egan-Richard Egan!!! Yum!

  • Steve: You are FABULOUS! Are you taken or single?
