Tasting the foam trub on the top of my primary fermenter. I was curious what the foam tasted like so I took a dip with my finger and found out.

  • mate thats just silly to have the lid open like that on a fermenting beer. The co2 protective layer has been disturbed and your dirty fingers have been submersed. Not to mention wild yeast thats just flated in...good luck anyway, hope it tastes good

  • I was transferring to seconday right after this, I didn't think it would matter much. Probably next time I'll leave the lid on till after trans to secondary.

    Thanks - Andrew

  • why? why? why? why? why?

  • Just to try and see what it is like! Thats why we brew isn't it? :)

    THanks - Andrew

  • I thought that stuff was called krausen?

  • that's not trub dude... the trub is at the bottom lol

  • That's the 2 girls 1 cup of homebrew - Nasty!!

  • Thanks for satisfying my own curiosity.

  • yeah i know the stuff you mean thats what you get in health food shops. brewers yeast, it has a vegemite taste.

but i suppose americans wouldnt know what this black aussie sludge is.

    i guess like marmite?

  • Not that I'm gonna start putting this on top of my corn flakes, but any side effects? You know, uh... down the line?

  • I've actually scooped it with a spoon and eaten it. It really isn't bad - kinda bitter, wierd texture.

  • LMAO! Your reflection on the taste and texture is priceless. That's the krausen, btw. I think the trub (sp) is the sludge on the bottom of your fermenter after you've racked. If you can bring yourself to taste that, please post.

  • part of the hobby is having fun.. as long as the beer turned out ok , no worries. I always remove the lid when I transfer and I've never had a bad batch. Ya gotta play with your beer or you might as well go to the store and buy it. Good job.
