So this was new to you too? I see it is really a new trick.
Go stand on a ledge, ready to climb down, except with Abe facing the chasm-side. When you press down, Abe will begin to auto-turn. You must stop this by suddenly beginning to run. Then, when you try to turn (walking), Abe will climb down instead (even if there is no ledge).
